He was born on October 23, 1945, in Norfolk, Virginia. Among these academically qualified newcomers, Ernie Watts stands tall. It should be added, however, that the 1969 crop of new stars includes a high percentage of performers whose formative years were devoted to extensive study rather than road travel. Today, thanks to the rapidity of communications and the proliferation of LP discs, recognition is a goal substantially less difficult to achieve. In Dizzy's and Bird's day, eminence in their field was hard come by, usually following a long period of apprenticeship as a sideman. The new generation of jazz that was spawned by the bebop revolution led, in a long and direct line, to the evolution of such talents as are displayed by the extraordinarily gifted young leader and his sympathetic sidemen on this, the first Watts LP. Perhaps what I am really trying to say is that it was an honor to know Eddie, as well as the Kammer family. When Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker were collaborating on their first classic recordings, Ernie Watts was not yet born. I know I am only “skipping a rock across a vast body of water” by mentioning such things, but they had an impact and a difference. He would call and always say his signature (gravelly-voiced gangster-like tone) “what-ya-doin’”? When my time came I vividly remember him handing me a $100 bill at my wedding reception before he left! So Eddie, so generous, so good of him. I was grateful to be an usher in him and Diana‘s wedding.

He taught me about Jimi Hendrix, REO Speedwagon, The Allman Brothers and even Lou Rawls to name but a few. Later, I had the pleasure of watching him meticulously and artfully clean and hand-wax his various cars over the years! He was always listening to music while fixing, building and/or doing something with his hands.
